Labour plans to use an opposition day debate next week to give MPs a chance to vote on the European Arrest Warrant.The debate will be called after the government won its bid to re-sign the UK to 35 EU justice measures, including the controversial arrest warrant.However, angry Labour and backbench Tory MPs accused ministers of breaking a promise after MPs were not given a vote on the warrant itself.

Treasury asks top civil servants to find £30bn in public service cuts

Whitehall’s most senior mandarins have been asked by the Treasury to draw up details of how an extra £25bn-£30bn in public spending cuts could be imposed a year after the next general election, according to cabinet insiders.The cuts being sought from permanent secretaries would cover the two years after the existing agreed spending review period comes to an end in April 2016, and so would cover the financial years 2016-17 and 2017-18

Serbia-Albania row over Kosovo mars historic Rama visit

Pricy pickle: London’s iconic Gherkin sold to Brazilian billionaire

One of London tallest and most recognizable buildings, nicknamed the Gherkin, has been sold to Brazilian multi-billionaire Joseph Safra in a deal reportedly worth £726 million. The deal was struck after Savills and Deloitte Real Estate were appointed earlier in the year to find a buyer. The firms courted interest from more than 200 would-be buyers.

APEC leaders support China-backed free trade ‘roadmap’

A summit of Asia-Pacific leaders on Tuesday (Nov 11) endorsed a Beijing-backed concept for a vast free trade area in the region, the meeting’s host Chinese President Xi Jinping said.
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit “approved the roadmap for APEC to promote and realise the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific”, Xi said at the close of the gathering near the Chinese capital. Xi added that the support “symbolises the official launch of the process towards the FTAAP.”

Momentum builds for Japan PM to call early election

Officials from Japan’s ruling coalition urged lawmakers on Tuesday to prepare for a possible early election, and a government source said Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was likely to delay a tax hike that could derail a promised economic recovery. A second government source said one option being considered was for Abe to call a snap poll before the end of the year if he decides to delay a planned but unpopular sales tax increase to 10 percent from next October.

Ebola cases in decline in Liberia, MSF says

The number of Ebola cases in Liberia is declining for the first time, though the outbreak is far from over, the aid organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres said on Monday.Unlike in neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone, where cases are increasing, MSF teams in Liberia are witnessing a decline for the first time since the beginning of the epidemic in March.

Syria’s bucket children desperate for aid

As the siege of Eastern Ghouta, a Damascus suburb, enters its third year, swarms of children armed with buckets can be intermittently seen scavenging the streets and bombed-out buildings in between rounds of fighting. They roam around on empty stomachs, hoping to find scraps of food and clean water. Some of them walk up to 15km a day for a single meal, feasting on anything from vegetable broth to stale bread made from animal feed.

Kilauea Volcano Lava Flow Ignites Its First Home in Hawaii

te lava flow creeping toward the Hawaiian community of Pahoa has claimed its first house, Hawaii County civil defense officials said Monday. Administrator Darryl Oliveira said a breakout “finger” from the lava flow traveled more than 15 yards in about an hour to make direct contact with the home on Cemetery Road, which then began to burn. Officials said one family member, who drove to Pahoa on Monday from another part of the island, was present as flames engulfed the home.

Colombians most indebted in Latin America

Some 65% of Colombian households claim that one or more of their family members are in debt, the highest percentage in Latin America, according to local media. The figure, which was published in a study by private firm Kantar Worldpanel called “Rising Latinos,” is down from last year’s number in which 69% of Colombian households were in debt, according to newspaper El Tiempo.
